Rag String Vessel Construction with Ilka White

There’s something lovely about a vessel for holding things.

This hands-on workshop begins with string making, then introduces Looping and Coiling as ways to construct vessels from humble rags.

Experiment and cross-pollination are central to the process, with approaches to shaping addressed as we go along. These techniques lend themselves to sculptural outcomes and a plethora of designs and applications begin to suggest themselves the more broadly we think!

Braided Rag Rug workshop with Ilka White

A great way to recycle old clothes and fabric!

In our second workshop with visual artists Ilka White, we will learn to make fantastic rag rugs using an off-loom, spiral-woven braiding technique, in this one day workshop. We share an inspiring range of colour and design possibilities in these workshops, as well as covering cloth and fibre types.

Beautiful and unique floor coverings are possible using contrasting colours, or you can blend patterned rags for a ‘carpet of flowers’. This braiding technique weaves in as we go so there is no stitching up required afterward.

Bring your own material to recycle and find out what riches can come from rags…

Most people’s work by the end of the class is about the size of a dinner plate. The completed size is up to you, and could range from a small mat to a room-sized rug. This workshop gives you all the skills you need to finish off the rug at home.

Botanical dyeing and tablet weaving workshop with Ilka White

We are excited to announce we will be running a series of workshops with talented textile artist Ilka White. I know it is a little while off, but we don’t want you to miss out!

All workshops will be held in the warm, spacious and light filled workshop room at the Newstead Railway Arts Hub, but take note… this is a Lab-like workshop – you will be using the stove burners in the kitchen, plus outside areas.

Day 1
For thousands of years plants have been used to dye fibre and fabric and a beautiful natural palette is still available today without the need for harmful chemicals. Local weeds or kitchen off-cuts can offer you harmonious hues in a range of values and intensity. This hands-on workshop introduces a selection of local colour possibilities, as well as discussing fibre types, mordanting options and dye safety. A shibori technique will also be used to produce patterned cloth. Come and discover some of nature’s hidden sources of colour!

Day 2
Tablet weaving is a method of making narrow bands, belts and straps on an ingenious ‘loom’ consisting essentially of a pack of cards with holes in the corners. An ancient technology, examples of tablet looms have been uncovered from the Iron Age and earlier! Learn to weave a beautifully patterned band on a portable loom that’s yours to keep. We’ll be weaving with the botanically coloured yarns dyed the previous day in our Natural Dyeing Workshop!
