Tiny Towns Art Trail: Newstead
The Arts Hub will be presenting a group exhibition ‘Trails of Thought’ as part of Tiny Towns Art Trail. The exhibition will feature the work of 15 local artists and makers from Newstead and surrounding districts. There will be a diversity of works on display: photography, printmaking, ceramics, painting, drawing and mixed media.
Join us at the official opening where you can meet the artists – all welcome!

Nominations are open to join the Arts Hub committee of management
The Newstead Railway Arts Hub is calling for nominations for the appointment of a new committee of management for 2018- 2019
We are keen to attract individuals to the committee who have a wide range of skills including: grant writing, social media and marketing experience, business planning expertise, people who are good facilitators, and have community organisational skills. It’s an ambitious ‘wish list’ but we have some exciting projects planned for the coming years.
You don’t necessarily need to live in Newstead either: we are interested in reaching out to nearby towns and seeing how the Arts Hub can be of benefit to nearby communities.

Invitation to Meet the Producers
As you may be aware, the Regional Centre for Culture in 2018 is an initiative of the Victorian Government in partnership with the Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal Clans Corporation, Central Goldfields Shire, City of Greater Bendigo, Hepburn Shire and Mount Alexander Shire.
Our job as Producers of the Regional Centre for Culture (RCC) program for 2018 is to facilitate and support existing events as well as creating some one-off events for the enjoyment of visitors and locals alike in each of the Shires over the course of 2018. Our research around Mount Alexander Shire has identified Newstead as the perfect location to host a celebratory event and to date we have conducted several meetings to begin working out details of what this shape this event may take.
We have planned two blocks of time in early December as we would like to hear and discuss your ideas about how individuals and groups of artists and community groups might like to engage with this one-off event. (And don’t worry, this isn’t a callout for volunteers!)

Concept:
Water is an important focus for communities in Mount Alexander Shire, providing welcome respite from the dry inland climate.
“Waterhole” will take place over an afternoon and evening on March 3, 2018. Appealing to all ages, it will feature the breadth of performers and art forms for which Mount Alexander (and particularly Newstead) is renowned.
The Newstead Swimming Pool is identified as holding a special place in the hearts of residents as a location for to recreation, learning, exercise and rehabilitation, and a place for social gathering and connection.
Elements of the event might include activities such as lilo races, karaoke movie
performance, dancing, exhibition of visual arts, craft, and other fun activities suitable for toddlers, young families, teenagers and the rest! However we are very keen to hear ideas from artists who live in Newstead about how they may like to be involved. Immingled: a photographic retrospective by Darron Davies

‘Immingled’ – an archaic word for ‘blending or mixing together’ is a photographic retrospective by Darron Davies celebrating a range of photographic themes captured in recent years.

These photographs, largely abstract in nature, use digital and film to explore that fine and mysterious line where the representational and symbolic meet.

Darron Davies is based in Castlemaine, a small regional town in central Victoria, Australia. Darron has exhibited widely in recent years working between digital and film cameras, producing landscape work as well as studio based photography. He has been a Finalist in the Blake Prize in 2013, 2015 and 2016. Darron’s photography has a meditative and reflective quality. Critics have use words such as ‘fragile’, ‘contemplative’ , ‘allegorical’ and ‘magical’ to describe his work. Darron believes that the best photographs are ‘breathed into existence’ – a term once coined by a reviewer in relation to his work – an attempt to find beauty and metaphor within even the most obscure of subject matter; finding a photograph where one may never have been found before.
Proposed Garden Plan for the Arts Hub
Cassia and Anna Read gave a wonderful presentation of their proposed garden design for the Newstead Railways Arts Hub on the 30th of October, and some of you may have been there. They are now eager to hear back from the community to fine tune the design in response to our feedback.

Newstead & District ‘Remembers’
The Newstead and District Historical society will host: “Newstead and District Remembers” an exhibition centred on the contribution of the local schools, and the community to World War One on 11 and 12 November and 18 and 19 November 2017 at the Newstead Railway Arts Hub, 8a Tivey Street Newstead. Hours will be from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on each of those days.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place at 5.00 pm on 11 November. At the ceremony, the book Newstead and District Remembers will be launched.
On 18 November at 10.00 am, Ray Stevenson will lead a Memorial Walk, leaving from the Arts Hub.
What motivated our people to make the tremendous sacrifices they did during the war? What goes through the mind of someone as he waits to go over the top, a man who knows the chances of him surviving that journey are slim indeed? You are invited to see an exhibition that looks at the actions of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
Newstead Primary School Exhibition
Newstead Primary School are proud to announce they are holding a whole school exhibition.
It is entitled: Australian Impressions; images, icons and belonging, which will be held at the Newstead Arts Hub.
The opening celebration is Thursday October 19 from 4pm -7pm – all welcome.
The exhibition will then be open weekends Saturday October 21- Sunday November 5 from 1-4pm depending on volunteers.*
Students have enthusiastically been working on art pieces representing Australian native flora, fauna, local Indigenous stories and ways they identify with Australia.
It will also be open for NPS’s Grandparent’s Day on Friday November 3 from 9-10.30am, so students can guide their family through.

Calling all Newstead artists…
Do you want to join us for Arts Open 2018? Labour Day Weekend March 11, 12, 13 and March 18 & 19th 2018.
Arts Open presents visual arts through open studios and group exhibitions across Castlemaine, Newstead, Maldon into Chewton and beyond. Castlemaine Art Gallery & Historical Museum will be the Arts Open festival headquarters, presenting an exhibition of some of the outstanding work of the region.
For 2018 the Newstead Open Studios group will present an Arts Trail, linking open studios across Newstead and surrounding areas (Green Gully, Sandon, Strangways, Welshmans Reef etc.). Right now we are keen to hear from people who want to open their studio or share someone else’s studio to present their work.
Then we will organise a group advertisement, update our website with all the studios that are part of our Arts Trail, organise an Arts Trail map, and more. We will share the costs across all participating studios and artists. This will be our 4th year of working together to promote Newstead Open Studios.
