There’s something lovely about a vessel for holding things.

This hands-on workshop begins with string making, then introduces Looping and Coiling as ways to construct vessels from humble rags.

Experiment and cross-pollination are central to the process, with approaches to shaping addressed as we go along. These techniques lend themselves to sculptural outcomes and a plethora of designs and applications begin to suggest themselves the more broadly we think!

Gerard Menzel will be holding his Zen brush painting workshop at the Railway Arts Hub on Sun 25th Oct 2015, 11am – 4.30pm.
Earlybird $65 (before 18/10), full fee $75 or $65 concession

Sumie (black ink on rice paper) is a beautiful way to paint nature and the world in all its beauty and grace as we see the world in a different Zen light, where the subjects essence or “kami” spirit is depicted. Zen painting is an art form, a way of living and breathing through the world.

The class will cover Zen insights, Sumie as meditation and art practice, the Zen way of painting and observation, and Zen as philosophy.

The origin of Sumie date back to the Southern School of Chinese Zen painting and it was transplanted to Japan by Esai and Dogen. Used to train the mind, it is one of the “Zen arts” including ikebana and shodo. The practice of painting is akin to Zen training of the mind body and senses.

Gerard Menzel studied with Andre Sollier and taught and exhibited in Australia and overseas. He has lived Japan where he also studied aikido.

Phil Elson will be giving a demonstration and talk at the Arts Hub on Saturday 24th of October at 3.30pm.

This is an opportunity to see a master potter at work. Phil will be bringing his pottery wheel along, so we will get a chance to watch him throw pots and talk about his craft and art. This is an opportunity to see lumps of clay be transformed into elegant forms – alchemy at work.

Phil Elson’s ceramics practice over the past 30 years has been strongly informed by the ceramics of South East Asia; in particular the art of Japan, China and Korea. His practice specializes in the thrown form with a particular emphasis on the use of fine translucent porcelain.

In 2008 Phil was awarded an Australia Council studio residency in Barcelona where he traveled to the Basque country to investigate the traditional ceramics of northern Spain.

In more recent times he has traveled to Berlin and then further travel took him into the rural areas of India and Nepal.

Phil has given a number a glaze and throwing workshops both locally and around the country.

Phil’s work has been represented in a number of galleries and exhibitions nationally and in Virginia USA. He is highly regarded for his fine throwing in porcelain and his exquisite glazes. Phil works from his studio in the central Victorian town of Castlemaine.
