4 women with an ongoing life long project of making art and craft, eventually need a platform to show it. As I was told many moons ago, ‘no use hiding your light under a bush’.
Diane Thompson, Jodie Curtis, Marcela Olea and Libby Noblet booked this exhibition in to the Newstead Arts Hub after having viewed a wonderful exhibition there called ‘Menagerie’ by a friend Teegan Wheeldon and Laura Gibbs. We loved the atmosphere of the hub and shortly after applied to have an exhibition there, for the same time the following year. Thinking then, a year is enough time to get things together and Spring an energizing time of year.
The Newstead Arts Hub is a converted Railway Station, taken from its rundown state to its present beauty and practicality through a State Government funding program that is on a mission to revitalize dilapidated stations into vibrantly run community sites.
Having meandered through the ‘art world’ for the term of my working life I didn’t find it difficult to find like minded people who were willing to ‘hop on board’ for a small group exhibition. Two wonderful friends, work colleagues and artists, Marcela Olea and Diane Thompson and another friend Jodie Curtis from my High School years at Kerang Technical High School. Platform 4, the name of our show, references the Newstead Arts Hub’s past life and the great springboard it provides us now for our group of 4.
Marcela and Diane present skillfully produced sculptural forms in a variety of mediums, including; resin, clay, feathers and textiles while addressing themes both humorous and esoteric. Diane’s sculptures are large outdoor totemic forms and small studio resin and mixed medium pieces. Jodie and Libby’s work is mainly in print form including etchings, collographs and screen prints, on paper and fabric. The textural, soft plant and abstract forms of Jodie’s etching work a contrast to Libby’s hard edged bright, busy screenprinted fabrics.
We’re very excited to be offering artists’ talks and demonstrations and a screen print on the hop day to support our show throughout the month of October.
